CHUNKING IN DRAWINGS / U. H. Obaidellah, et al. THE ROLE OF CHUNKING IN DRAWING REY COMPLEX FIGURE
نویسنده
چکیده
—The study investigated the effects of chunking and perceptual patterns that guide the drawings of Rey complex figure. Ten adult participants (M age = 22.2 yr., SD = 4.1) reproduced a single stimulus in four drawing modes including delayed recall, tracing, copying, and immediate recall across 10 sessions producing a total of 400 trials. It was hypothesized that the effect of chunking is most obvious in the free recall tasks than the tracing or copying tasks. Measures such as pauses, patterns of drawings, and transitions among patterns of drawings suggested that participants used chunking to aid rapid learning of the diagram. The analysis of the participants’ sequence of chunk production further revealed that they used a spatial schema to organize the chunks. Findings from this study provide additional evidence to support prior studies that claim graphical information is hierarchically organized.

diagram. Chunks are evaluated based on the likelihood of parts of the diagram becoming segmented into units of elements according to shared characteristics, such as those described by the Gestalt principles. This is followed by measures to establish whether chunks from an abstract diagram are hierarchically organized. The effects of learning with various modes of drawings (i.e. Tracing, Copying...
متن کاملDiagnosing the Periphery: Using the Rey–Osterrieth Complex Figure Drawing Test to Characterize Peripheral Visual Function
Peripheral vision is strongly limited by crowding, the deleterious influence of neighboring stimuli on target perception. Many quantitative aspects of this phenomenon have been characterized, but the specific nature of the perceptual degradation remains elusive. We utilized a drawing technique to probe the phenomenology of peripheral vision, using the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure, a standard n...
متن کاملChunking Ability Shapes Sentence Processing at Multiple Levels of Abstraction
Several recent empirical findings have reinforced the notion that a basic learning and memory skill—chunking—plays a fundamental role in language processing. Here, we provide evidence that chunking shapes sentence processing at multiple levels of linguistic abstraction, consistent with a recent theoretical proposal by Christiansen and Chater (2016). Individual differences in chunking ability at...
متن کاملDCAFE: Dynamic load-balanced loop Chunking & Aggressive Finish Elimination for Recursive Task Parallel Programs
In this paper, we present two symbiotic optimizations to optimize recursive task parallel (RTP) programs by reducing the task creation and termination overheads. Our first optimization Aggressive Finish-Elimination (AFE) helps reduce the redundant join operations to a large extent. The second optimization Dynamic Load-Balanced loop Chunking (DLBC) extends the prior work on loop chunking to deci...
